Cecil Stevens has served as the Auditor for Lee County since 1974 and is Lee County’s longest serving elected official and longest serving county-wide official in South Carolina. He serves on Lee County Jury Commission and Lee County Forfeiture Land Commission.

Some of the duties of the Auditor’s office are:

  • Gathers and compiles a record of all taxable property in the county
  • Applies millage to the assessed values of all property to produce revenue
  • Processes refunds on motor vehicles that have been sold or moved out of state
  • Adjust vehicle taxes on vehicles that have excessive miles
  • Takes application on residents that qualify for the Homestead Exemption
  • Process and mails all tax notices and tax duplicates

The Office of the Coroner investigates all suspicious and violent deaths as well as any deaths occurring at a hospital, nursing home or under Hospice care at a personal residence. Additionally, the Coroner must investigate any death occurring less than 24 hours after a patient is admitted to a hospital and all hospital emergency room deaths. The coroner properly disposes all unclaimed bodies and handles the burial of the same.

The Coroner cooperates with various professionals such as physicians, pathologists, medical personnel, other coroners, and law enforcement personnel in determining causes of death. The Coroner is on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Lee County Communications/9-1-1 is a department of the Lee County Emergency Services and is the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for law enforcement, fire, rescue, emergency medical, and emergency management services within all of Lee County. The 911 Center provides emergency communication services to all citizens and all public safety agencies throughout the County. Our mission is to provide the most effective emergency communications possible, while maintaining our commitment to the preservation of life and property, for the citizens, visitors, and public safety agencies of Lee County.

You can help us HELP YOU by properly numbering your house or business!

It is very important that each residence and /or business of Lee County has a valid 911 address sign posted outside their residence or business so that Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services or the Fire Department can find YOU in an emergency.

The address should be clearly visible day and night, and from both directions. Please call 803-484-1723 if you have any questions.

Numbers must be conspicuously placed immediately above, on, or at the side of the appropriate door so that the number is visible clearly from the street. In cases where the building is situated more than fifty feet from the street or road, the building number also must be placed near the walk, driveway, or common entrance to the building, or upon the mailbox, gatepost, fence, or other appropriate place so as to clearly be visible from the street or road.

Residential numbers must not be less than three inches in height. Business numbers must not be less than four inches in height.

The Lee County Fire and Emergency Management Division are a department of the Lee County Emergency Services.

The Fire Department responds to fires, wrecks, and other all calls for service that are received by the 911 Center. Volunteers make up the majority of our fire personnel and are the backbone of our fire service.

The Emergency Management Division is responsible for the coordination and operation of county-wide disasters and hazards. These responsibilities would include:

  • The planning of all hazards both natural and man-made.
  • Hazard mitigation
  • Disaster response and recovery
  • Operation of the Emergency Operations Center during activation, training, drills and exercises

The Magistrate’s Court is the Summary Court for Lee County. This court handles small claim civil matters up to $7500, as well as traffic court and miscellaneous criminal cases including wildlife, hunting, boating and fishing violations.

Magistrate’s Court does not accept personal or business checks to pay fines. Only cash or money orders are currently accepted as payment for court fines. The court does accept cash or credit card payments if the person appears in person. Payments can also be made online. To access online payments, go to www.sc.gov to make traffic / criminal fine payments. Do not send cash in the mail. Telephone payments are not accepted.

Judge Catherine F. Harris has served as Probate Judge for Lee County since 1993.

Each county has a Probate Judge who is elected to a four year term and has jurisdiction over marriage licenses, estates of deceased persons, guardianships of incompetents, conservatorships of estates of minors and incompetents, minor settlements under $25,000 and involuntary commitments to institutions for mental ill and chemically dependent persons. They also have exclusive jurisdiction over trusts and concurrent jurisdiction with Circuit Courts over powers of attorney.

The Register of Deeds Office is located in the Clerk of Court offices and is a recording and public service office. The primary function of this office is to record, maintain, and preserve all land records for the County and make them readily available for viewing by the public. The documents recorded include deeds, mortgages, easements, satisfactions, powers of attorney, liens, plats and real property transactions.

The staff of the Register of Deeds office cannot perform title/record searches for the public, but are happy to assist by showing you where the books and plat records are and explaining how to use them to find the information you need.
